It’s important that you check your oil level every a month. Have a regularly time of the month that you know you have to check your oil level. Either the beginning or the end of the month so you remember to check your oil level.

Oil helps keep your engine lubricated and running smoothly. So these checks are important. You have to make sure you have enough oil. And make sure it’s not contaminated.

  1. Make sure the engine is cold. It should have been switched off for at least 10 minutes.
  2. Open the bonnet of your vehicle.
  3. Locate the dip stick it is usually on the left side of the engine at the front.
  4. Pull out the dip stick and wipe it off on a clean, lint-free rag.
  5. Insert the stick back into the pipe.
  6. Pull the dipstick out again and look at the film of oil on the end of the stick. You need to look at the dipstick oil level.
  7. If your oil looks clean enough but only reaches the ‘add’ level on the oil dipstick reading, you need to add oil.

It is important to check your oil level light. If your oil light comes on while you’re driving. It means there has been a drop in the oil pressure in your engine.

It’s important not to let the vehicle run for long with insufficient oil pressure. As this can result in extensive damage to your engine.

How To Check Engine Oil Quality

The quality of engine oil is important for your vehicle to run smoothly. If your engine oil is dirty or smells of gasoline. Then it’s time for your oil to be changed.

  8. If the colour of the oil is translucent with a dark-brown texture. With a sludge and sediment particles. The oil needs changing in about less than 1000 kms.
  9. If the oil on the cloth is of dark black colour having a murky texture to it. With lots of sediment particles. You should be changing the car’s oil as soon as possible before it damages the engine.

Good to know

Some European vehicles don’t have an oil dipstick. If you can’t find one on your vehicle, check the owner’s manual for how to check your oil.
